Community Partner Invitation:

Dear Community Partner,

We are writing to invite you to take part in an exciting opportunity to help sponsor one of the longest-serving and most vital organizations supporting the immigrant community in our nation’s capital. The Ethiopian Community Center, Inc (ECC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community service organization dedicated to charitable and humanitarian efforts on behalf of the community in the metropolitan Washington Area. The ECC has been an important resource for newcomers to our city and region since it was chartered in our nation’s capital in November 1980, and we are still going strong. We hope we may include you as an ECC partner as we continue to welcome and serve immigrants and refugees that have made our area their home.

ECC’s mission is to meet the needs of immigrants and refugees who have come here from not only Ethiopia and other African countries, but from all parts of the globe, through a wide variety of services designed to assist families and individuals to make their way in their new home, and to achieve self-sufficiency and success.

 ECC fulfills its mission by:

  • Providing education and training to support immigrant and refugee communities;
  • Providing assistance, information and referrals in the areas of education, employment, health care, housing, translation, immigration & legal services through ECC programs and partnerships with service providers;
  • Providing social service and charitable assistance and referrals to members of the community in need;
  • Working to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers and bias faced by immigrants through advocacy and cultural awareness programs and events;
  • Development and dissemination of information and instructional materials on a variety of timely issues as well as conducting workshops and events on important topics.

ECC’s core activities include extensive multi-level English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, Amharic language classes, computer training and certification classes. The ECC also hosts annual summer camp programs for children and teens offering exciting, age-appropriate education, cultural enrichment and fun experiences at a reasonable cost.

ECC joins with local health organizations to organize health fairs, distribute health related materials and conduct educational seminars addressing topics such as behavioral health, children’s health, environmental health, domestic violence, HIV treatment and prevention, women’s and men’s health, and chronic/infectious disease prevention. ECC has also hosted workforce development, homeownership, and Know-Your-Rights presentations highlighting the civil rights of immigrants and providing free legal information and consultations with lawyers. On a day-to-day basis, the ECC assists walk-in clients with needs in every aspect of life, mental and physical health care, education, housing and employment, personal crises and legal issues, with compassion and a wide network of contacts who can help. The ECC also facilitates access to health insurance, hosting free weekly signups through government and community programs.

We are requesting your financial sponsorship to support these urgently needed ECC programs. Your generous partnership will help us provide these essential services to immigrant communities in the DC region during these fast-changing times, supporting program services, operational budget and space, training programs, translation services, educational classes and student scholarships, and community outreach events. As we ask you to partner with us, we also are proud to invite you to the ECC’s 1st Annual Spring Celebration! The Celebration will be held on April 21, 2018 at 6 pm at the Civic Center in downtown Silver Spring, MD.  We hope you will join us in ensuring that the ECC continues to be a guidepost and resource serving the unique and challenging needs of immigrant and refugee populations, building on the communities’ strengths and the partnership of local institutions and businesses.

Attached is information about our event, and about sponsorship levels and benefits. Should you need additional information about ways you can partner with the ECC, please contact Ms. Hermela Kebede, Executive Director, at eth@prodigy.net or 202-726-0800.
